World Without Fish : PSA

Hello! Here is my first attempt at creating a PSA in the digital form…and I’m just okay with it. I really wanted to attempt to do something with videos, but that is really hard!  I found lots of videos that I wanted clips from on Youtube, but using the various youtube downloaders…the ads and pops up are horrendous. I mean, everytime you click, another window opens.  I have an adblocker, but then with it enabled I couldn’t use the software. So, clearly, if one is going to make videos, the best way is to make your own. I give a lot of credit to the time and patience of a person who can go find videos, download them, edit them, splice etc. After watching Pauline’s example last week, I thought I would try Vimeo.  It was really user friendly but still I found myself putzing and playing around with every function. For this, I only used images.  I ran into problems this time with a lot of photos these days on websites and through google searches to be copyrighted (meaning I couldn’t just right click and save) For various photos, I found myself taking a select screenshot and saving them that way.

Me...frustrated at why computers don't do what you want them to do. Or searching and googling how to do something and eventually finding out that is only for the paid version.

In my PSA, the images are partnered with words that drive the story home and advocate for sustainable fishing and eating practices. The music could have been more helpful, but on the free version of Vimeo, you can’t have more than one music track. When the fun beginning ends, I really wanted the music to change and get serious, and then end hopeful as I give possible solutions. I enjoyed coming up with a storyline that would resonate with my audience, which for right now, is just our classmates living in Wisconsin. While Kurlansky’s book was never about Wisconsin, he story about the depletion of cod fish connects our home with a world wide issue. I wanted people to not just know about this issue, but see how they can help it right here at home.  I think this is the power of doing a PSA and can really promote civic engagement if we get our students reading stories that are windows into other worlds, but creating projects that can be mirrors in their local schools and communities.

If for some reason the video above doesn’t work, here is a link to the PSA: https://vimeo.com/815157169

  1. Hello Becky! Your PSA was very educational. I like how you included a realistic action that people can do in order to save cobs.

  2. I enjoyed how you pulled your "Wisconsin" viewer in with a good ol' Friday Fish Fry. My parents live by Serb Hall and on Friday nights, the line is crazy long with people waiting for their fish fry. I too used Vimeo and found it extremely user friendly and the possibilities of editing, playing with font, color, motion was endless. I had to cut myself off at some point. Yet, my type-A personality wanted to keep editing. :)

  3. Hi Becky,
I laughed at reading the first paragraph of your post because you literally described how I felt at first when I started working on my PSA! It is very daunting especially if you are an amateur like me. I really struggled before finally settling on what platform to use. I must agree with you that Vimeo is very user-friendly and easy to use once you get the hang of it.

I love your final product. Very insightful and well put together. Thank you for sharing your creation!
